EN And when you were born, in the day of your nativity your navel was not cut, neither were you washed with water for your health, nor salted with salt, nor swaddled with clouts.
^4
5
LA Non pepercit super te oculus, ut faceret tibi unum de his, misertus tui: sed projecta es super faciem terræ in abjectione animæ tuæ in die qua nata es.
EN No eye had pity on you to do any of these things for you, out of compassion to you: but you were cast out upon the face of the earth in the abjection of your soul, in the day that you were born.

EN And I passed by you, and saw you: and behold your time was the time of lovers: and I spread my garment over you, and covered your ignominy. And I swore to you, and I entered into a covenant with you, says the Lord God: and you became mine.

LA Et habens fiduciam in pulchritudine tua, fornicata es in nomine tuo: et exposuisti fornicationem tuam omni transeunti, ut ejus fieres.
EN But trusting in your beauty, you played the harlot because of your renown, and you have prostituted yourself to every passenger, to be his.
^15
16
EN And taking of your garments you have made you high places sewed together on each side: and have played the harlot upon them, as has not been done before, nor shall be hereafter.
^16
17

EN And you have taken your sons, and your daughters, whom you have borne to me: and have sacrificed the same to them to be devoured. Is your fornication small?
^20
21

EN that you also built you a common stew, and made you a brothel house in every street.
^24
25
EN At every head of the way you have set up a sign of your prostitution: and have made your beauty to be abominable: and have prostituted yourself to every one that passed by, and have multiplied your fornications.
^25
26
EN And you have committed fornication with the Egyptians your neighbours, men of large bodies, and have multiplied your fornications to provoke me.
^26
27
LA Ecce ego extendam manum meam super te, et auferam justificationem tuam, et dabo te in animas odientium te filiarum Palæstinarum, quæ erubescunt in via tua scelerata.
EN Behold, I will stretch out my hand upon you, and will take away your justification: and I will deliver you up to the will of the daughters of the Philistines that hate you, that are ashamed of your wicked way.
^27
28
EN You have also committed fornication with the Assyrians, because you were not yet satisfied: and after you had played the harlot with them, even so you were not contented.
^28
29
EN You have also multiplied your fornications in the land of Chanaan with the Chaldeans: and neither so were you satisfied.
^29
[!note]- Thou hast sacrificed, etc…
As there is nothing more base and abominable than the crimes mentioned throughout this chapter; so the infidelities of the Israelites in forsaking God, and sacrificing even their children to idols, are strongly figured by these allegories. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
30
LA In quo mundabo cor tuum, ait Dominus Deus, cum facias omnia hæc opera mulieris meretricis et procacis?
EN Wherein shall I cleanse your heart, says Lord God: seeing you do all these the works of a shameless prostitute?
^30
31
LA Quia fabricasti lupanar tuum in capite omnis viæ, et excelsum tuum fecisti in omni platea: nec facta es quasi meretrix fastidio augens pretium,
EN Because you have built your brothel house at the head of every way, and you have made your high place in every street: and was not as a harlot that by disdain enhances her price,
^31
32
LA sed quasi mulier adultera, quæ super virum suum inducit alienos.
EN but is an adulteress, that brings in strangers over her husband.
^32
33
EN Gifts are given to all harlots: but you have given hire to all your lovers, and you have given them gifts to come to you from every side, to commit fornication with you.
^33
34
EN And it has happened in you contrary to the custom of women in your fornications, and after you there shall be no such fornication, for in that you gave rewards, and did not take rewards, the contrary has been done in you.
^34
35
LA Propterea, meretrix, audi verbum Domini.
EN Therefore, O harlot, hear the word of the Lord.
^35
36
LA Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Quia effusum est æs tuum et revelata est ignominia tua in fornicationibus tuis super amatores tuos, et super idola abominationum tuarum, in sanguine filiorum tuorum quos dedisti eis,
EN Thus says the Lord God: Because your money has been poured out, and your shame discovered through your fornications with your lovers, and with the idols of your abominations, by the blood of your children whom you gave them:
^36
37
LA ecce ego congregabo omnes amatores tuos quibus commista es, et omnes quos dilexisti, cum universis quos oderas: et congregabo eos super te undique, et nudabo ignominiam tuam coram eis, et videbunt omnem turpitudinem tuam.
EN Behold, I will gather together all your lovers with whom you have taken pleasure, and all whom you have loved, with all whom you have hated: and I will gather them together against you on every side, and will discover your shame in their sight, and they shall see all your nakedness.
^37
38
EN And I will judge you as adulteresses, and they that shed blood are judged: and I will give you blood in fury and jealousy.
^38
39
EN And I will deliver you into their hands, and they shall destroy your brothel house, and throw down your stews: and they shall strip you of your garments, and shall take away the vessels of your beauty: and leave you naked, and full of disgrace.
^39
40
EN And they shall bring upon you a multitude, and they shall stone you with stones, and shall slay you with their swords.
^40
41
EN And they shall burn your houses with fire, and shall execute judgments upon you in the sight of many women: and you shall cease from fornication, and shall give no hire any more.
^41
42
EN And my indignation shall rest in you: and my jealousy shall depart from you, and I will cease and be angry no more.
^42
43
LA Eo quod non fueris recordata dierum adolescentiæ tuæ, et provocasti me in omnibus his, quapropter et ego vias tuas in capite tuo dedi, ait Dominus Deus, et non feci juxta scelera tua in omnibus abominationibus tuis.
EN Because you have not remembered the days of your youth, but have provoked me in all these things: wherefore I also have turned all your ways upon your head, says the Lord God, and I have not done according to your wicked deeds in all your abominations.
^43
44
EN Behold every one that uses a common proverb, shall use this against you, saying: As the mother was, so also is her daughter.
^44
45
EN You are your mother’s daughter, that cast off her husband, and her children: and you are the sister of your sisters, who cast off their husbands, and their children: your mother was a Cethite, and your father an Amorrhite.
^45
46
LA Et soror tua major, Samaria, ipsa et filiæ ejus, quæ habitant ad sinistram tuam: soror autem tua minor te, quæ habitat a dextris tuis, Sodoma, et filiæ ejus.
EN And your elder sister is Samaria, she and her daughters that dwell at your left hand: and your younger sister that dwells at your right hand is Sodom, and her daughters.
^46
47
LA Sed nec in viis earum ambulasti, neque secundum scelera earum fecisti pauxillum minus: pene sceleratiora fecisti illis in omnibus viis tuis.
EN But neither have you walked in their ways, nor have you done a little less than they according to their wickednesses: you have done almost more wicked things than they in all your ways.
^47
48
LA Vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, quia non fecit Sodoma soror tua, ipsa et filiæ ejus, sicut fecisti tu et filiæ tuæ.
EN As I live, says the Lord God, your sister Sodom herself, and her daughters, have not done as you have done, and your daughters.
^48
49
EN Behold this was the iniquity of Sodom your sister, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance, and the idleness of her, and of her daughters: and they did not put forth their hand to the needy, and the poor.
^49
50
EN And they were lifted up, and committed abominations before me: and I took them away as you have seen.
^50
51
LA Et Samaria dimidium peccatorum tuorum non peccavit: sed vicisti eas sceleribus tuis, et justificasti sorores tuas in omnibus abominationibus tuis quas operata es.
EN And Samaria committed not half your sins: but you have surpassed them with your crimes, and have justified your sisters by all your abominations which you have done.
^51
